Two hours by ferry from Split and there it is, the famous island of Hvar surrounded by the islands of Brač, Vis and Korčula. With almost 68 km of length, it is one of the biggest islands on the Adriatic. The island of Hvar

Hvar dates from the 4th century when the Syracusans from Vis founded Stari Grad and Hvar. During the rich history Romans, Byzantines and Venetians left their legacy in almost every part of the island. From 1886. Hvar slowly became famous as health resort rich with Dalmatian healthy products and untouched nature. Called the queen of the Croatian Dalmatian islands, Hvar was an important strategic and nautical position throughout the history. With almost 140 years of organised tourism, Hvar has much to offer: cultural attractions, night life, heavenly sandy beaches under pine trees, great lavender fields in Zastrazisce, secluded bays near Sućuraj... And one more interesting thing: Hvar is the only island in the world which houses three UNESCO heritages ( The Stari Grad Plain, the "Za Križem" Easter Procession in Jelsa, and the lace from the Benedictine Nuns in Hvar Town).

 

 

Stari Grad and the town of Hvar

Unique treasure kept behind Hvar walls has made this gorgeous town one of the most visited towns in Dalmatia. Thanks to Venetians, Hvar became a safe harbor for boats which made it a very important for entire Dalmatia and its trade routes. Hvar has a long cultural tradition, and it is known as the place where one of the first theaters in Europe was created. It is a hometown to the Renaissance poet Hanibal Lucić. Stari Grad (en."Old Town" - gr."Faros"), dating from 384 BC, is one of the oldest towns in Europe. The beauty of the most ancient part of Stari Grad falls within the UNESCO Protected World Heritage Site.

Agava lace - Hvar aloe lace

Probably you did not know that the town of Hvar is home to only monastery in the world which knits lace from agave plants. Hvar lace is unique because the thread is collected from the aloe leaves of agave plants that grow on the island. The process starts from picking the leaves which are then specially processed to get a thin white thread.

 

 

Secluded bays and beautiful beaches

There is one more thing you must do before leaving the island. Take the map and pick your beach in a secluded pine shaded bay and take a swim in crystal clear sea.
